National Suicide Prevention Strategy : Suicide is the leading cause of death among individuals between 15-29 years of age in India. With an increase in the rate of suicide from 10.2 to 11.3 per 1 one lakh population in the past 3 years, the MOHFW has rolled out the first National
Suicide Prevention Strategy (NSPS). The policy aims to reduce suicide mortality by 10% by 2030.
The NSPS provides a multisectoral approach involving national and international government ministries, families and communities, and educational institutes to help reduce the country’s suicide rates. It recommends the REDS pathway for suicide prevention:
• Reinforce leadership, partnership, and institutional capacity in the country
• Enhance the health services capacity to provide suicide prevention services
• Develop community resilience, societal support for suicide prevention and reduce stigma against suicidal behaviours
• Strengthen surveillance and evidence generation
Objectives:
• To establish effective surveillance mechanisms for suicide prevention in the next 3 years To establish psychiatric OPDs that provide suicide prevention services through District Mental Health Programme, within the next 5 years
• To integrate mental well-being curriculum in all educational institutes within the next 8 years.
